the Hampshire Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS) Network now have a joint website offering support and help to voluntary and community groups throughouth the county. Estimates show there are apporximately 8,400 voluntary organisations active in Hampshire alone.

Social enterprises have defined social aims such as the provision of local services or goods, job creation, or training, they are owned and run by their communities (users or clients etc) and profits are distributed amongst members or used for the benefit of the community. Examples of social enterprises include artists’ co-operatives, village shops and play groups.

Groups of individuals as well as small community and voluntary groups within the UK that want to improve their communities can apply for funding through the Wakeham Trust. The Trust are particularly interested in supporting neighbourhood projects, community arts projects, projects involving community service by young people, or projects set up by those who are socially excluded.

What sort of Impact on the Environment does your nearest city have? |
A key WWF-commissioned report ranked the 60 cities in the UK by the average ecological footprint of their residents. Salisbury was ranked third with each resident needing an average of 2.79 planets to sustain their lifestyle. Winchester came out bottom needing an average of 3.62 planets (if everyone lived as we do in the UK, we would need an average of three planets to support us).
