Two lucky winners will attend conference for free


Pitt RiversTWO lucky competition entrants will each receive a pair of FREE tickets to the Foundations of Archaeology one-day conference, which is being held at Dinton Village Hall on Saturday 6 May. The conference, which is open to all, will explore the present day legacy of the work of pioneering Cranborne Chase archaeologists Sir Richard Colt Hoare, William Cunnington and General Pitt-Rivers. Its theme is ‘Celebrating the past in the present’.

The day will commence with a discussion by Nathalie Barrett and David Ashby (University of Winchester) entitled Recent Fieldwork in the Footsteps of the Fathers of Archaeology at Wor Barrow, Winkelbury and Stockton. Mike Allen (University of Bournemouth), one of the country’s leading environmental archaeologists, will discuss After Pitt Rivers – Recent Re-analysis of the Discoveries at Wor Barrow. Emma Rouse and Philippe Planel of Wyvern Heritage will talk about The Foundations of Archaeology project as a whole, while after lunch the National Trust’s Martin Papworth’s discussion is entitled Richard Colt Hoare and William Cunnington Exploring Ancient Wiltshire & Dorset. Independent archaeologist Martin Green will reveal details of 300 Years of Archaeological Exploration on Cranborne Chase, Adrian Green (Salisbury Museum) will explore the theme of General Pitt-Rivers and Cranborne Chase and David Dawson of Wiltshire Museum will host questions at the end of the programme.
