Channel 4 TV invites applications for its Village of the Year 2017 contest

Channel 4 Comp - Penelope Keith

VILLAGES within the Cranborne Chase AONB are being encouraged to enter an exciting Channel 4 competition, Village of the Year 2017, with a £10,000 prize up for grabs for the winner. The deadline for applications is 14 May 2017.

During the summer, actress Penelope Keith and her team of judges will be visiting villages across the UK to determine the victor. But you have to be in it to win it and Reef Television, which is making the programme, is encouraging villages around the country, including in Cranborne Chase AONB, to apply.

“Rather than in Hidden Villages, where we choose a county to go to, this is an opportunity for villages to reach out to us,” the 76-year-old told The Telegraph, referring to the popular Channel 4 series in which she explores the British people’s relationship with their villages.

“We know that the Cranborne Chase AONB has some wonderful villages and we would love them to apply,” said Jenni Crane, assistant producer at Reef Television. “All villages can apply by visiting our website www.villageoftheyear.co.uk and following the simple online application. Or they can email us at voty@reeftv.com.”

AONB director Linda Nunn said: “I would encourage all our wonderful villages to enter this fantastic competition. We have so many gems within the Cranborne Chase, and this is the residents’ chance to shout about them and have them featured in a fantastic TV competition. What a great way to get the message across to the British public that village life within the Cranborne Chase AONB is simply the best.”

Once an application has been received, the Village of the Year team will get in touch to request more information. After that, it will review all applications and shortlist around 76 villages. The team will then arrange a day to come and film at the village. Villages will be grouped into four broad regions of the UK, depending on the spread of applications. Each region will have one winning village that will go through to a grand final with an opportunity to win the £10,000 prize.
